Off-Road Tyres

What are the Best Off-Road Tyres?

The best off-road tyres are designed with features to enhance the off-road driving experience, whilst also being able to drive on the road too. Off-road tyres need to be able to disperse water, mud, gravel and all sorts of other terrains in order to maintain grip and traction in off-road conditions. Good off-road 4x4 tyres, such as the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac, have characteristics such as:

  • Aggressive tread pattern with deep grooves: TractiveGroove Technology provides enhanced grip in deep mud and snow - and rapid evacuation of gravel/mud/snow/sand/water to maintain traction off road
  • Option to add studs to off road tyres: For unrivalled grip on very harsh off-road conditions such as snow/ice, tyres can be studded – this isn’t usually necessary in the UK due to our mild climate and are illegal to use on the road
  • Protection for wheel rims: When driving off road your vehicle will be put into harsh conditions, the best off-road tyres will have rim protectors to help prevent damage to your wheels
  • Noise Reducing: It’s even more important to reduce noise when driving on rugged terrain to make for a more comfortable journey off road as well as making the cabin quieter on the roads too
  • Reinforced Sidewalls: Help to prevent damage from sharp objects when driving off road
  • Reinforced Tread Cap: Prevent punctures from sharp rocks or other objects when driving off road

Off-Road Tyres for Land Rover 4x4s

In 2018 Goodyear and Land Rover took on a challenge not for the faint-hearted – pushing the boundaries of their Range Rover Sport Plug-In Hybrid fitted with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tyres. When Land Rover wants to push their vehicles to the limit, they knock on our door. Because they know our tyres help them shatter boundaries time and time again. Tackling 99 turns and 999 steps at a 45% gradient along the way, the Range Rover was propelled over China’s Tianmen Mountain, making its way into the clouds. It took racing driver Ho-Pin Tung nerves of steel and pretty awesome tyres to steer the first-ever car over one of China’s most famous landmarks, reaching the so-called ‘Heaven’s Gate’ and completing this Dragon Challenge.

What’s the Difference Between SUV Tyres & Off-Road Tyres

SUV tyres are designed purely for road usage, however, unlike a regular car tyre, they are designed to take the additional load of an SUV and deal with the higher centre of gravity required for a larger, taller vehicle.

4x4 tyres are designed to take on the durability of off-roading adventures due to their reinforced design with aggressive tread patterns, which helps to maximise grip on all terrain types.

Off-Road Tyres on Road Performance

Off-road tyres are designed to be used predominantly off-road so if you use your 4x4 more on-road then you should consider the use of all-terrain type tyres designed more for SUV vehicles.

Off-road vehicles are not designed to provide outstanding performance on road surfaces, so extended use could cause wear and tear as well as braking, handling, etc. not performing as well as a tyre intended purely for road use.

All Terrain Tyres: Road and Off-Road Use

All-terrain tyres are a great cross-over between a road and off-road tyre – offering you the best of both characteristics for vehicles that move between rough off-road conditions and regular roads at a moment’s notice.

Extreme Off-Road Tyres

Extreme off-road tyres should only be purchased if you plan on tackling the harshest of environments and terrain, and are not recommended for large amounts of road mileage. Extreme off-road tyres are made purely for off-roading conditions – their extra-large tread blocks are designed to take on every terrain in all conditions to make your 4x4 unstoppable.
