Tyre Glossary

Cornering grip

What is cornering grip?

Cornering Grip is the force that counters the direction of the car when turning, this gives tyres the power to grip the road and how well the tyre holds onto the road through corners.

When is it important?

When you’re driving on winding roads.

Which is the best tyre for cornering?

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is one of the best tyres for cornering grip thanks to Dry Stability Plus Technology providing extra grip when you need it most.

Rolling resistance

What is rolling resistance?

Rolling resistance is the force stopping a tyre when moving across a road or surface. It is how easily a tyre rolls across a surface and can save on fuel when optimised.

When is it important?

If you’re trying to reduce your fuel consumption.

Performance

What does performance mean?

A general term describing a vehicle or tyre’s braking, accelerating, handling, and traction.

When is it important?

All the time.

Handling

What tyre handling mean?

Tyre handling is a measurement of what a driver can perform with a car such as steering, accelerating and braking.

When is it important?

All the time.

Aquaplaning resistance

What is Aquaplaning Resistance?

Aquaplaning is when a layer of water builds up between a vehicle’s tyres and the road, usually after rain. This can impact driving performance and safety. The higher aquaplaning resistance, the more a tyre can grip on a wet road.

When is it important?

When you’re driving in the rain or on wet roads.

What tyre is best for Aquaplaning Resistance?

The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 is a tyre made to handle any weather conditions all year round. Thanks to Aqua Control Technology the grooves of the tyre continuously evolve over the tyre's lifetime to ensure water is dispersed, allowing the tyre to maintain contact with the road.

RunOnFlat tyre

What does it mean?

A tyre that allows you to keep driving after a puncture or flat tyre, for up to 50 miles at a maximum speed of 50mph.

When is it important?

When you get a puncture or flat tyre and can’t change the tyre straight away.

Wet grip

What does it mean?

How a tyre grips the road and brakes when on a wet surface. You can find the wet grip of a tyre on the EU tyre label

When is it important?

For steering, stopping, and overall control of your vehicle.

Dry grip

What does it mean?

How a tyre grips the road and brakes when on a dry surface.

When is it important?

For steering, stopping, and overall control of your vehicle.

Comfort

What does it mean?

A tyre‘s ability to absorb shocks from bumps or other irregularities on the road.

When is it important?

When you want to feel the car, not the bumps in the road.

Noise

What does it mean?

The external noise a tyre produces contributes to the noise in the surrounding environment. A tyre that produces low internal noise will keep things quieter inside the car.

When is it important?

When you want a quiet journey for you and those around you.

Which is the best tyre for quiet noise?

The best tyres for a quiet journey are tyres featuring SoundComfort Technology which are designed with a foam ring to the inner surface of the tyre. The benefit of SoundComfort Technology is up to 50% less interior vehicle noise – making for a quiet cabin without compromising on tyre performance.

Braking distance

What does it mean?

The distance it takes for a vehicle to come to a complete stop after brakes are applied.

When is it important?

On all road surfaces.

Mileage

What does it mean?

An indication of the usable life of a tyre. A “high mileage” tyre is typically long-lasting.

When is it important?

All the time.

Which tyre is best for mileage?

The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 provides 20% more miles than the next best tested competitor*, making it an ideal tyre choice for anyone looking to get more miles for their money.
