Alfonso Abril - Co-owner of Transportes Las Maravillas, Spain

95% - reduction in frequency of tyre incidents

Pharmaceuticals are delicate products. They must be carefully transported in temperature-controlled trailers, and pharmaceutical companies will only hire logistics partners who can provide evidence of this. But for Murcia-based logistics firm Transportes Las Maravillas, who began to specialise in this field 10 years ago, it is no problem.

One of the current owners, Alfonso Abril, explains why: “My father started the company in 1979 as a refrigerated transport company for fruit and vegetables. But more recently, we have become experts at transporting pharmaceuticals. We needed to achieve quality certifications in order to operate but, as our reputation grows, we can invest in better machinery and bring even better levels of service to pharmaceutical clients.”

"These are difficult times and we have to work hard and keep moving forward. With Goodyear, we are always becoming stronger"

“It’s not just about the temperature control of the goods”, Alfonso explains. “Our clients also demand that we deliver on time, and that we can monitor the status of the vehicle and its tyres, as well as the contents of the trailer. If the truck has to stop, it can have serious consequences for our client, so they want to know what we are doing to prevent it.”

One of the steps Alfonso takes to ensure quality is to partner with Goodyear. The tradition of buying Goodyear tyres began with his father and continues to this day, but the company also monitors the status of its 96 trucks by using Goodyear Proactive solutions. “When we started, the only data I was interested in was kilometres”, admits Alfonso. “But now I need to know driving time, fuel economy, tyre pressure, tyre temperature and so on.”

Alfonso goes on to illustrate how the company suffers from very few tyre-related problems as a result: “We used to have maybe 30 blowouts a year. But now that we can easily spot low tyre-pressure or insufficient tread, we have reduced that by about 90%. It’s very hard to have a blowout these days.” What’s more, the Goodyear CheckPoint installed in the depot enables tyre checks to done quickly and automatically. Trucks that used to sit idle for a few days to allow manual checks to take place are now back out on the road again in just a few minutes time.

Since they began transporting fruit and vegetables in the 1970s, Transportes Las Maravillas has always insisted on high quality, and Alfonso is delighted to work with a tyre partner who shares those values: “These are difficult times and we have to work hard and keep moving forward. With Goodyear, we are always becoming stronger.”
