Europe to be carbon-neutral by 2050.

Three easy ways to drive forward.

27/09/2023

The 2020 European Commission’s Green Deal aims to make Europe the world’s first carbon-neutral continent by 20501. In the 2023 re-evaluation, that commitment hasn’t wavered a bit. In fact, the EU has only grown more ambitious: the initial goal for 2030 was a 30% reduction in Europe’s carbon emissions. Now, the aim is a reduction of no less than 45%. The road transport industry, we and you, can contribute to this.

Let’s start with some basic numbers:

  • More than half of Europe's goods are transported by road. The European road transport industry is valued at over €500 billion every year2

  • Heavy-duty commercial vehicles accounted for 27% of the CO2 emissions from the European transportation sector in 2019, showing the potential for the sector to support the journey to a carbon-neutral continent3

  • Over the last 20 years, investments in new technologies have seen emissions per vehicle from road transport fall. An encouraging sign, but since the amount of heavy vehicles on the road has increased, a lot of work remains to be done4.

It is clear that the elimination of greenhouse gases presents the industry with one of its biggest challenges yet.

How can your fleet contribute to this worthy goal? Here are three quick ways to instantly lower your carbon footprint:

Green Deal – 3 easy ways to lower carbon footprint

Opt for versatile and fuel efficient tyres

1. Opt for versatile and fuel-efficient tyres

According to our 2022 Sustainable Reality Survey4, 55% of all fleets already drive on fuel-efficient tyres. It’s easy to see why, fitting your vehicles with fuel-efficient tyres can potentially save up to 100 tonnes of CO2 and 40,000 litres of fuel every year when switching from an EU C-label for fuel efficiency to a B-label tyre5.

Meet Goodyear FUELMAX ENDURANCE. This tyre range brings fuel-efficiency levels from the highway to state and secondary roads.

Make sure your tyres are properly inflated

2. Make sure your tyres are always properly inflated

Underinflation by just 1 bar costs €1.483 extra in fuel every year for each vehicle6, while underinflation by 20% will reduce tyre life by 30%.

Check out the Goodyear Total Mobility offering and discover how our fuel-efficient tyres, in combination with our comprehensive tyre management solutions can help you prevent up to 90% of tyre-related downtime7.

Rethink retreading

3. Rethink retreading

Retreading not only keeps tyres out of the dump but the retreading offer also requires 56% less crude oil* than manufacturing a brand new one. And the benefits don’t end there. Retreading can extend tyre life by 150% and cut bills by up to 10%. 9

Get ahead in the Sustainability race with Goodyear Total Mobility

At Goodyear, we believe fleet and tyre management solutions can further contribute to achieving the Green Deal targets. Even fleets of conventionally powered vehicles could lower their CO2 emission by up to 10% 10 through measures like the ones mentioned above. Initiatives like load factor optimisation, digitalisation and greater use of collaborative transport platforms can help decrease your carbon footprint even more and put your fleet ahead in the sustainability race.

Therefore, a fleet operator’s choice of an advanced mobility partner is crucial on the road to a sustainable future. Goodyear stands ready to assist you on your sustainability journey.
