What does it mean?

There are 50 performance criteria that Goodyear subjects its commercial vehicle tyres to but the EU Tyre Labelling system covers only three.

EU tyre label testing

Introduced in 2012, the standardized EU tyre label analyzes each truck tyre under three key performance criteria:

  • Fuel efficiency – A measure of the tyre’s rolling resistance, which has an impact on a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Rated from A (highest) to F (lowest).
  • Wet grip – A measure of the tyre’s braking ability on wet roads. Wet grip is rated from A (highest) to F (lowest).
  • External rolling noise - A measure of the external noise generated by the tyre, in decibels. The black sound waves indicate the noise class of the tire, from 1 (quiet) to 3 (loud).

Goodyear internal tests

All our new truck tyre designs must meet high standards in no less than 50 performance criteria before they are passed for production. This is 47 more that those covered by the EU tyre label. They include:

  • Dry handling
  • Cornering grip
  • Durability
  • External noise
  • Wet traction
  • Stability at high speed
  • Mileage
  • Footprint contact pressure
  • High Speed
  • And many more…

To ensure good performance in winter conditions, our specific truck winter tyres are also tested for factors including traction, handling and braking on ice and snow. To show that these tyres meet the requirements to classify them as severe winter tyres, on the sidewall they carry not only the M+S designation but also the 3-Peak-Mountain-Snowflake (3PMSF) marking. With the increasing requirement for the use of winter tyres in Europe, their use is becoming more important to not only ensure compliance but also to prevent vehicles becoming stranded by severe winter conditions.

But for us that's not enough At Goodyear we believe that the EU tyre label helps commercial vehicle operators make an informed choice when purchasing new truck tyres. That’s why we worked together with EU officials in developing the label prior to its introduction. We also regularly commission independent testing organizations to compare the performance of our truck tyres with those of our competitors.
