Goodyear Introduces High Load Truck Tires with Interlaced Strip Technology and 10-tonne Trailer Tire
Brussels, December 05, 2011 – Goodyear is introducing the High Load range of tires to overcome the situation of increasing weight on truck front axles, particularly due to the introduction of Euro VI emission limits in 2013, and to offer trailer benefits. tire-1The new European environmental classification is similar in its stringency to the 2010 US emissions standards and requires extra equipment. Goodyear has developed the High Load steer axle tires to compensate for this added weight on the front axle. As well as the new steer tires, the High Load range includes a trailer tire, which can increase the capacity of an axle by up to 1,000kg allowing 10-tonne axle weights. New features that give the tires extra capacity include a Goodyear innovation called Interlaced Strip Technology and a new cavity shape.
Ten tires comprise the new High Load range including four Goodyear Marathon LHS II + steer tires, for long haul applications, as well as five Goodyear Regional RHS II steer tires and a Goodyear Regional RHT II trailer tire for regional haul applications.
10-TONNE TRAILER TIRE
The new RHT II 385/65R22.5 trailer tire was shown as a prototype at the 2010 IAA Commercial Vehicle Shown in Hanover. This tire allows 10-tonne axle weights and offers great benefits to operators by making a new weight-saving trailer concept possible. With these tires, a tandem bogie with a 20-tonne capacity can be used in place of a conventional 24-tonne tri-axle bogie. This is because the innovative 385/65R22.5 tires have a load index of 164 = 5 tonnes instead of the normal 160 = 4.5 tonnes. A 4x2 tractor with a 20-tonne tandem axle semi-trailer gives a maximum GVW of 38 tonnes compared to 40 tonnes maximum GVW for a 4x2 tractor and tri-axle semi-trailer. However, the tandem bogie is 1 tonne lighter than a tri-axle equivalent. This means that a trailer equipped with such a tandem bogie can carry an excellent payload, with significantly lower purchase and operating costs than most conventional tri-axle trailers.
INTERLACED STRIP TECHNOLOGY
Interlaced Strip Technology, which is patented by Goodyear, is an innovative belt reinforcement in the crown area of the tire. The belt reinforcement comprises a steel layer in the crown area which allows the tire to carry up to 7% more load. During the construction of the tire, the belt is applied spirally and crosses itself at each turn, resulting in enhanced tire load capacity. As well as the benefit of higher load, there is less deformation in the carcass when it deflects and uniform tire pressure in the footprint is maintained during the whole tire life for a better wear profile. This means increased mileage potential.
Not all High Load tires feature Interlaced Strip Technology but they all have new cavity shapes to optimize them for the additional lLoad carrying capacity. Goodyear Marathon LHS II + tires feature FuelMax Technology. Key to this technology, which gives the tires a fuel-saving low rolling resistance, are innovative high-silica tread compounds and a new technology called Silefex, which is used in Goodyear’s latest tire the LHS II +. Silefex is an innovative fuel-efficient tread compound featuring a specific blend of silica fillers and premium natural rubber. The tread patterns of these tires not only provide low rolling resistance, even wear profile, good handling and stability, but also excellent wet performance.
Goodyear Regional RHS II and RHT II are steer and trailer tires respectively for trucks operating in regional haulage. These tires feature KMax Technology, which has been developed to maximize tire mileage, allow a wide application range and improve fuel consumption to reduce cost per kilometer.

Two other sizes can increase the load capacity of the front axle: the 355/50R22.5 Marathon LHS II + and the 375/50R22.5 Marathon LHS II. The 355/50R22.5 Marathon LHS II + has a comparable diameter to a 295/60R22.5 tire and a 7,500 kg load capacity per axle compared to 6,700 kg with the same air pressure. The tire pressure for the High Load tire is 7.8 bar compared to 9.0 bar with the same load and the conventional tire.
The 375/50R22.5 Marathon LHS II has a comparable diameter to a 315/60R22.5 and 8,000 kg load capacity per axle compared to 7,100 kg with the same air pressure. The tire pressure in the new tire is 7.75 bar compared to 9.0 bar with the same load and the conventional tire.
The extra tread rubber volume in these tires combined with lower ground pressure and tread rubbing gives more than proportional additional mileage. Lower fuel consumption is another potential benefit due to between 5 – 6% less rolling resistance1. There is also greater comfort for driver and potentially less damage to cargo thanks to a reduction in the inflation pressure of 15% at equal loads. Furthermore, the ground pressure is less, which gives the environmental benefit of less road wear1.
All the tires are fully regrooveable and retreadable.
