Geneva, Switzerland, March 2, 2010 – Goodyear is proud to announce that its forward-looking concept tire made with BioIsoprene™ technology was recently awarded the prestigious “Environmental Achievement of the Year Award”. The innovative tyre will be presented for the first time to the automotive world at the Geneva Motor Show 2010.

The award winning concept tyre with BioIsoprene™ technology represents a breakthrough alternative to a petrochemically produced ingredient in the manufacture of synthetic rubber with renewable biomass. The tires made with BioNatsyn™ polymer which is made from BioIsoprene™ product, are the result of a collaboration between Genencor, a division of Danisco, and Goodyear.

Nominated in three categories

The Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence were presented in five categories, in which Goodyear was officially short-listed for three awards: ‘Tyre Manufacturer of the Year’ for its overall performance and developments over the past 12 months, ‘Tire Technology of the Year’ for its DuraPlus Technology and the ‘Environmental Achievement of the Year award’ for the Biolsoprene concept tire. The winners were chosen by a panel of 17 internationally renowned industry experts.

“Receiving this kind of recognition from automotive and industry experts for an achievement that showcases the future possibilities in our industry is enormously fulfilling. Goodyear’s first concept tyre manufactured with BioIsoprene™ technology shows the enormous progress we have made in using a bio-based alternative to the petroleum-derived raw material isoprene in our production process,”says Jean-Pierre Jeusette, Goodyear Director Tire Technology Consumer Tires for Europe, Middle East and Africa.“The development of BioIsoprene™ technology could help us reduce industry impact on the environment by applying renewable raw materials in the supply chain and making Goodyear less dependent on oil-derived products.”

BioIsopreneproduct is derived from renewable raw materials, and represents a significant development within the biochemical and rubber industries. Aside from synthetic rubber for tyre production, traditional isoprene is used for the production of a wide range of products, such as surgical gloves, golf balls and adhesives. Thus, the potential for BioIsopreneproduct is substantial.

“The development of this breakthrough biochemical was an important milestone in our collaboration with Goodyear,”says Philippe Lavielle, Executive VP of Business Development for Genencor.“BioIsoprenetechnology is an excellent example of Danisco’s leadership in industrial biotechnology through our Genencor division.”

“These nominations and the award win confirm Goodyear’s continued commitment to developing innovative and more environmentally friendly tire technologies,”says Jeusette.

The Goodyear BioIsoprene tyre will be on display at the Geneva International Motor Show, next to the entrance of the media center during press days and on Goodyear’s booth (hall 2, nr 2057) during public days.
