There are many definitions of the word ‘sustainability’. A commonly used one is this, from the World Commission on Environment and Development:

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

For Goodyear, ‘sustainability’ means we recognise the world’s growing demand for natural resources, which makes them more valuable and, often, more expensive and challenging to purchase. As a result, we set long-term goals to effectively reduce our operational requirements for these natural resources. Doing so helps the environment, but also improves our business performance.

What’s it like to be a Goodyear tyre tester?

You’ll travel the world, driving everything from high-performance sports cars to super minis on terrain ranging from ice to perfect asphalt on a freshly-laid track. If the faintest whiff of petroleum sets your pulse racing, then being paid for your skills as a driver probably sounds like your dream job - but as Vincent Lopes, test driver for Goodyear, explains, it takes discipline (even obsession) to make a successful career of it.

Goodyear road safety survey suggests it could give under-25s skills and confidence to reduce deaths on the road.

The numbers are down but still, despite road blocks and safety campaigns, scores of South Africans are grieving the loss of loved ones killed in road accidents across the country throughout the year. A recent survey conducted by Goodyear into the behaviour of young drivers particularly suggests that they are not adequately prepared for such high stress motoring and should consider going back to driving school to hone their skills and feel good on the road again.

Despite receiving little education on tyre characteristics and maintenance during their driver training, our under-25s are more likely than other young drivers to perform regular tyre checks or to look at technical performance ratings when selecting a new set of tyres.

Young South African drivers, especially, are far more likely than their European counterparts to be distracted by phone calls and internet use while behind the wheel; it’s a worrying statistic that has emerged amongst others as a critical area of concern in Goodyear’s third annual Road Safety Survey.

More than just a way of getting around, their wheels make young South Africans feel independent and represent a living space that is uniquely theirs. As part of Goodyear’s commitment to understanding and addressing road safety, the company recently probed the behaviour of 6 400 drivers under the age of 25. The survey covered 16 markets (15 European countries and, for the first time, South Africa) and was specifically designed to obtain detailed information regarding young drivers‘ level of training and preparation, their habits behind the wheel, their most common worries and mistakes on the road, as well as their views on cars and driving in general.

With the Easter holiday upon us, a period traditionally characterised with a high accident and death rate on our roads, Goodyear South Africa wants to share the following insights and its commitment to a solution.

A high level of anxiety amongst young drivers, manifesting in aggressive behaviour on the road, has emerged as a critical area of concern in Goodyear’s third annual Road Safety Survey. As part of its commitment to understand and address driver safety, Goodyear probed the road behaviour of 6 400 drivers under the age of 25. The survey covered 16 markets (South Africa plus 15 European countries) and was designed to get inside the brain of the young driver and provide some interesting insight into youth on the road.

Armed with big plastic bags, Goodyear-branded T-shirts and caps to keep them sun safe, and an infectiously happy level of enthusiasm, the 13 girls, aged between 9 and 18, plucked up rubble and other wildlife-endangering debris that had washed up or been dumped – and took great pleasure and pride in restoring the area’s pristine beauty.
