Addressing future tyre technology challenges with Next Generation Goodyear RunOnFlat:

04-03-2008Product group: Passenger   Category: Technology

Goodyear is proud to present its next generation RunOnFlat tyre technology, which offers numerous benefits to both the consumer and the environment, including improved comfort, reduced mass and rolling resistance, increased fuel economy as well as reduced CO2 emission levels.

Goodyear's next generation RunOnFlat technology is currently in the Original Equipment approval process with leading car makers.

Considerate to the environment: less fuel and CO2

RunOnFlat next generation

Goodyear's new generation RunOnFlat tyre technology provides additional comfort but also ensures less rolling resistance, which leads to less fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions. The new generation RunOnFlat tyres support automotive manufacturers to bring to market vehicles that adhere to stricter CO2 emission guidelines and limits set by European authorities.

With RunOnFlat tyres, there is also no need for a spare wheel or a car jack. This frees up space for luggage, lowers cost and saves weight, which leads to greater fuel economy.

RunOnFlat technology with ‘bio' filler

Goodyear is currently also working on the development of an ultra low rolling resistance RunOnFlat tyre with environmentally friendly materials. For this prestigious project Goodyear is working in close cooperation with two research partners: The Italian research company Novamont and the German car maker BMW. One of the project's main tasks is to develop a new ‘bio' filler as an alternative to traditional fillers used in tyres. This new filler, which will be made out of renewable resources like corn starch, may have a major environmental impact and lead to a reduction of CO2 emissions during its production process.

Safety and mobility

Goodyear RunOnFlat tyres allow drivers to keep on driving in the event of a puncture or blow-out and therefore, leaving them ample time to get home or to a nearby repair shop by providing continued mobility within a distance of 80km and at a maximum speed of 80km/h – even on a fully deflated tire. Goodyear's RunOnFlat effectively puts an end to the hassle of changing a tyre whilst being exposed to passing traffic or unloading the boot in the pouring rain to find the spare tyre.

Consumer demand drives sales of RunOnFlat

For the past few years, Goodyear's RunOnFlat has been one of the leading active safety technologies to help drivers maintain full control over the car in the event of a blow-out or puncture. Interest in the technology is growing: Goodyear sold over 2.5 million RunOnFlat tyres in 2007, and the Original Equipment market's interest leads the demand for Goodyear's innovative technology.

Next Generation RunOnflat

Incorporating specific consumer demands and addressing important environmental issues, Goodyear's next generation RunOnFlat technology has evolved to meet the specific demands facing the automotive industry today: from flexible vehicle design challenges to environmental and mobility challenges. Goodyear today equips one in every three cars that is originally fitted with this tyre technology.
