Renault chooses EfficientGrip for electric sedan Fluence Z.E.
Brussels, Belgium, December 8, 2009 – Environmentally friendly technologies that have a positive impact on the world's climate and help stabilizing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will take center stage during the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15), Denmark. The award winning fuel-saving tire Goodyear EfficientGrip will be part of the event, as exclusive fitment on the forward-looking electric Renault Fluence Z.E. Car and tires will be on display at the Radisson Hotel in Copenhagen and available as CO2-clean press shuttle for journalists from all over the world during the international Climate Change Conference.
The electric version of the sedan Renault Fluence is exclusively fitted with Goodyear EfficientGrip tires. "Since up to 20 percent of a car's energy consumption can be accredited to its tires, the tires' rolling resistance level is an important parameter, especially for a battery- powered car such as the Renault Fluence Z.E," says Jean-Pierre Jeusette, Goodyear's Director Tire Technology Consumer Tires for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Renault came to us with the objective to present to them a tire with extremely low rolling resistance levels and – at the same time – very high levels of dry and wet performance. We are proud that the new EfficientGrip convinced Renault. Thanks to EfficientGrip's proven performance on the current Megane 3, Renault has selected Goodyear as exclusive tire development partner for the Renault Fluence Z.E.", says Jeusette.
The Renault Renault Fluence Z.E. with Goodyear EfficientGrip tires1 will first be launched in Israel and Denmark, followed by other countries. Production of the electric Renault Fluence Z.E. will kick off in the first half of 2011. The new Goodyear EfficientGrip is already available across Europe in various sizes.
Goodyear FuelSaving Technology: less CO2 and more driving performance
The Goodyear EfficientGrip with FuelSaving Technology is a more environmentally friendly ultra-high performance summer tire that delivers important fuel savings while offering high mileage and excellent braking performance levels – on dry and wet roads.
Independent performance tests2 run by German TÜV SÜD Automotive, one of Europe's leading testing and certification organizations, prove that the new Goodyear EfficientGrip provides:
- 13% better rolling resistance
- 2% shorter braking distance on wet and dry roads
- 1.9% better fuel consumption
Additionally, extensive long-term tread wear tests1 conducted by TÜV SÜD Automotive show very positive results for the tire's mileage potential: A car equipped with the new Goodyear EfficientGrip can drive up to 8 percent more kilometers on the driven axle and 49% on the free axle, which is another significant benefit for consumers and more friendly towards the environment.
Fuel-saving effect confirmed by leading German automotive magazine
An additional independent test by a leading German automotive magazine confirms the EfficientGrip's positive effect on a car's fuel consumption without compromising the car's driving performance: The magazine's testers measured a reduction in fuel consumption of almost one liter per 100 km – or more than 11 percent – with a car fitted with EfficientGrip tires.
EfficientGrip offers additional environmental improvements beyond its fuel consumption benefits and the reduced CO2 emissions. The silica tread compound uses the latest generation of polymers and, inline with the European legislation, does not contain any high aromatic oils. The new EfficientGrip is ten percent lighter than its predecessor and with less material used, carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced during production. Less material for the tire production combined with the fact that fewer tires are needed to achieve a given mileage, ultimately leads to less material to be recycled at the end of the tire's life.
15.000 participants expected at COP15
Denmark hosts the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference, which takes place at Bella Center in Copenhagen from the 7th to the 18th of December, expecting more than 15.000 participants from over 190 countries, representing governments, the business community and civil society.<br />

Goodyear employs approximately 75,000 people and manufactures its products in more than 60 facilities in 25 countries around the world.
Goodyear's innovations have set automotive standards for more than 100 years. Goodyear has been the pioneer of the innovative safety technology known as RunOnFlat, which allows a driver to continue on a journey with a punctured tire. Goodyear is the world's leading manufacturer of RunOnFlat tires, with applications on various BMWs, the award winning Mini, Mercedes-Benz high performance cars, Opel and other brands. Additional Goodyear RunOnFlat fitments are on the horizon, as the company's designers are working with multiple automobile manufacturers on more than 150 RunOnFlat projects.
