About 20% of a car’s fuel consumption can be accredited to the tyres. One of the ways to reduce fuel consumption is to decrease the rolling resistance. A decrease in tyres’ rolling resistance therefore leads to a vehicle’s reduced fuel consumption.
Low Rolling Resistance
As a rubber ball’s rebound height is reduced, the energy is dissipated in every bounce. So too, energy is dissipated when a tyre rolls and is deformed. Therefore, less deformation means less rolling resistance. Goodyear engineers use the latest computer simulations to reduce the deformation of the tyre, the quantity of material being deformed and the energy loss when deformed.

New tyre shape
In comparison to its predecessor, the EfficientGrip features an optimised cavity which reduces the tyre’s deformation and with it its rolling resistance. In Addition, as less material is needed, the tyre has a lower weight. All these factors result in lower fuel consumption.
Unique tyre structure
Two of EfficientGrip’s construction goals include providing a reduced rolling resistance and low weight. Compared to the predecessor, the Goodyear EfficientGrip features a lower polyester ply end which contributes to a reduction in weight. In addition, EfficientGrip features a thinner sidewall than the predecessor, which contributes to an even lower weight and reduced rolling resistance.
Innovative materials
The CoolCushion Layer of the EfficientGrip features a new Goodyear patented technology with thermoplastic inclusions for a lighter tyre.
The compounds of the belt, the sidewall, the chafer and the toe guard contain an optimised filler system as well as a new curing system. In combination with the tyre shape and the construction, this contributes to 85 percent of the total rolling resistance reduction compared to the predecessor.
